Arão, nome de raiz germânica, resultado da evolução do nome "Ara", chamou-se também S. Salvador de Vilar de Lamas.

XII e a antiguidade comprova-se pela designação dos lugares: Agrolento, que vem do arcaico Argo e do adjectivo lento; Eirado virá de "heerado", campo de heras; Arrequeixo, do arcaico "Erequeixo", o que pode significar talvez terreno despejado de águas ou de pousio; Senra, presume-se que venha de prédio rústico; e Vilar de Lamas, composto de "villar" (núcleo de povoamento ou fracção de "villa rústica") e "lama" (parece que deveria ser outro prédio medieval, "alagadiço ou alagado") este com alguma importância, por se tratar do seu nome antigo.
